On June 21, 2022, I participated in the Alzheimer’s fundraiser “The Longest Day”. This had me live streaming interviews (with the goal of them winding up podcast episodes) from 6 am to 9 pm. I interviewed all sorts of fun people, and got a lot of good content out of it.

One of the interviews was with Sean Cawelti, the artistic director of the Rogue Artists Ensemble in Los Angeles. We talk about what being an artistic director is like for him, his work as a puppeteer and designer, and how he (and the industry) pivoted when COVID struck.

This is now the beginning of calling the podcast Contents May Vary. Woo hoo.

In October 2021, I attended the ceremony for both the 2020 and 2021 Writers and Illustrators of the Future Award. I did a write-up of the event, which you can
read here. However, there were some great pieces I got via audio that didn’t transfer well to the written word, so I wanted to do an extended edition. It also includes some snippets from the ceremony itself, which you can watch in its entirety here. So, consider this a ‘behind the scenes’ extra for the Awards.

Well, lots of world politics happening in February. But this update isn't to tell you about stuff you've already heard about on the world stage, but to give you an update for what's been happening with the LA Suttons. More under the cut. Read more... )

Well, the first week of October was very busy, which is why this September update is a bit delayed. September overall was relatively calm, however. More under the cut.

The heat was overwhelming during August. Add in the California fires (nowhere near us, thankfully) and the hurricanes (there's a hurricane Kate apparently?) and it's been not-so-fun weather time. And of course the earthquake on August 7. It's weird that I'm now used to them. More under the cut.

The end of June had some minor issues (more below), so this is a few days late. I know I owe a response or two to my last one, but it's been difficult to do much beyond work and the minimum upkeep on everything else.

June overall was pretty much same old, same old. Yes, I'm fully vaccinated (and so is my wife), but I don't trust people, and news of the Delta variant making its presence known in Los Angeles has me still masking up when I go out.

More under the cut....

Author’s Note: this is a piece of humor, and not intended as an actual guide for how to interact with the celebrities you admire.

Like many things currently in my life, I blame Martin Freeman for the creation of this guide. It was 2014: I was lucky enough to be in London on an internship, during the time he played the title character in Trafalgar Transformed’s Richard III. They had on-stage seating, which I, of course, had to do (if only because I can now say I shared a stage with the man). As he stormed past during his first entrance, my lizard brain piped up: “I could tackle him!”

As I interacted with more celebrities in my time in Los Angeles, I began to jokingly refer to how close I was in that same vein.

I've attended the Writers & Illustrators of the Future Awards several times now. In fact, Episode 22 of this podcast was covering the 2017 ceremony. Attending this awards ceremony is always fun, and this year was no different. This was the 35th annual awards ceremony, and the theme was Retro Robotics.

Marsia Powers is a Los Angeles real estate agent by day, Whedon fan by ... well, by all free time? She not only helps manage the con, but she also helps run the fan sites Whedonopolis and Fandomopolis, which you may have noticed I've written for occasionally in the past year. I sat down with Marsia and talked about Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, Joss Whedon, being a fan, and WhedonCon.

Victoria Male is one-half of the team behind the podcast and website Your Biggest Fangirl.

Victoria and I talked their podcast, approaching fandom from an academic and critical mindset, and other serious topics like Tobey Maguire and Darren Criss.

Since I had also started getting into audio (and podcasts) in 2014, I decided I wanted to start a series of interviews with women in the community to discuss what it was like to identify as a woman in the geek community. This is the second of a series of interviews where I take an academic approach.

Sora and I met thanks to the same Facebook Sherlock fan group I met the previous geek girl interview, Supriya Limaye. In fact, I had also interviewed Sora in 2014, while we both were in London at the time. However, Sora asked that I re-interview her since so much time had passed.

“Every car has a story,” says John Cruz, General Manager at Pick Your Part in Wilmington. The noise that accompanies his job at a car crushing facility is just part of the chaos and commotion. “I kind of like the chaos,” he says.

What good is having an audio recommendation section without recommending some of my own work? ;-)

"Every Car Has a Story" is a piece I did for KCRW’s “SoundsLA” project. The point of the project was to produce short (one minute) non-narrated pieces (i.e., you never hear my voice explaining what’s going on) that took an unusual sound in and around Los Angeles and tell a story.

This was a lot more difficult than it sounds. As with writing prose/non-fiction, doing a short audio takes much more time than going longer. I think I had a total of 15 minutes worth of audio from this guy and I had to pick 30 - 45 seconds of it.

Additionally, doing non-narrated is also much harder than doing narrated. In my other piece I’ve done for KRCW (which will be a future audio recommendation), I produced both a narrated and non-narrated version. Narrated versions let you do shortcuts in a way, because if you don’t get the right audio that explains the story, you can chime in and fix it. Non-narrated, on the other hand, means you have to solely rely on the person (or people) you’re interviewing to tell the whole story.

Hope you enjoy!

On June 7, I was lucky enough to attend the red carpet for the series finale of the Netflix show Sense8. Much of the cast was there, and there was a sense of sadness and hope as I interviewed them.

This is the first of a series of interviews where I take an academic approach.

Supriya and I met, as mentioned in the interview, thanks to a Facebook Sherlock fan group for those in Southern California. At the time, she worked for Geek and Sundry, although now she works for DeviantArt. Originally from the Silicon Valley area, she moved to Los Angeles to look for work. We talk Harry Potter, Reddit, and other topics.

In February, I had the chance to attend the red carpet premiere of Living Among Us, a movie shot in the style of a documentary that assumes vampires are real and just made themselves public. (Yes, I do bring up the similarities to What We Do In the Shadows, although as the trailer shows, it’s more in the vein of Blair Witch Project.) While there, I interviewed a wide range of people, both there as part of the movie and just to support it.

Last October, I got to yet again attend Stan Lee’s Los Angeles Comic Con, formerly known as Comikaze. My second time attending, this time I only went one day. This convention, now in its sixth year, was Los Angeles’ first major comic convention. As with any convention, there were plenty of panels, celebrities, and artists and vendors to go about.
