And with this, I am FINALLY caught up on my podcasts. Tomorrow, I'll share my 2024 Year in Review I've been posting to my website.

Los Angeles native Jeri Westerson writes a Tudor series, the King’s Fool Mysteries, and a Sherlockian pastiche called An Irregular Detective Mystery. She wrote fifteen Crispin Guest Medieval Noir Mysteries, a multi-nominated series. She also wrote several paranormal series and standalone historicals. She has served as president of the SoCal chapter of Mystery Writers of America, president and vice president for two chapters of Sisters in Crime (Orange County and Los Angeles), is a member of the LA Sherlockian scion of the Baker Street Irregulars, and a founding member of the SoCal chapter of the Historical Novel Society.

On April 25, 2024, the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California, was the home of the 40th Writers of the Future Awards and 35th Illustrators of the Future Awards. I wrote up the event for The Geekiary, but there were some interviews that didn’t quite make the final cut. So, consider this a ‘behind the scenes’ extra for the Awards.

The time got away from me, as you'll read about in November's update. Part if it was the last week of October was wrapped up with a work conference and my first press red carpet in over two years, so.... More under the cut.

LeVar Burton Reads, produced by Stitcher, and hosted by (obviously) LeVar Burton. Released weekly in a season format, with an approximate running time of 60 minutes. Started June 2017.

I was a little on the upper age range in the target market for Reading Rainbow when it came out in the mid-80s. But I loved to read, and I had connected to Geordi LaForge’s character on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and so I watched anyway. And loved it.

In fact, in 2014, when I heard he was bringing the show to the web and to an app through a Kickstarter campaign, I gladly donated $50 (and still proudly wear the t-shirt I got, which almost inevitably gets someone excited at seeing Reading Rainbow when I wear it). Additionally, I loved that he seemed to be embracing this side of his personality, such as reading “Go the F*ck to Sleep” as part of a fundraiser Rooster Teeth put on back in 2014.

So, when I heard that he was doing a podcast that was basically him reading short stories, I gladly subscribed on iTunes. My off-line reading has dropped off tremendously in the past few years, and I’m trying to make up for it when I can. I listen to the occasional audiobook when I have the time, and this sounded exactly what I needed to expand my reading.

Petrea Burchard is an actor, author, audiobook narrator, and voiceover artist. We met at a writer’s group we both belong to, when Petrea did a presentation on audiobooks. As someone who listens to audiobooks when I have time in-between listening to podcasts, I was already intrigued. But when she said she was the original English voice of Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo, she had me hooked.

Petrea has written two books, has narrated the Westwick Witches mystery series, and has done both stage and screen, among other things. We talk about all of this, and more.

Last year, when I attended the 2017 Writers of the Future Awards, I got a chance to interview author Kevin J. Anderson, who was one of the judges. Alas, the audio went to The Bad Place, lost in the ether. However, he thankfully was happy enough to do a phone interview with me later that month.

Author of more than 140 books, you may know him for his books in the Star Wars or Dune universes -- or from his original work such as the Saga of Seven Suns. As with my interview with fellow Writers of the Future Award judge Nancy Kress, we delved deep into his writing process, including the differences between writing original fiction and works based in someone else's universe, writing comics, and more.

Back in April, I attended the 2017 Writers of the Future Awards. While there, I was lucky enough to connect with author Nancy Kress, who was one of the judges. Author of 27 novels, 3 books on writing, and many, MANY short stories, she's won 6 Nebulas and 2 Hugo Awards. Later that month, I managed to do a phone interview with her, where we talked about her writing process, the differences between science fiction and fantasy, and her advice to new writers.

Back in late April, I attended the 2017 LA Times Festival of Books. The largest book festival in the US, this free annual event celebrates the written word. With panels on a variety of topics, readings and interviews with authors, and even music performances, there's always something for everyone. This was my third year attending. While I was there, I interviewed many of the people in the various vendor booths throughout the festival.

"Hey: it's that one guy!" It's the cry of many a character actor (so much so that it's got its own page on TV Tropes), and for actor Stephen Tobolowsky, that's fine with him. Appearing in over 200 films and/or television episodes, you may know him as the insurance salesman in Groundhog Day, the substitute teacher Sandy Ryerson in Glee, or from any number of various roles.

In 2014, I had the chance to interview him. He was going to be at that year's LA Festival of Books. He's coming back to this year's LA Festival of Books, promoting his newest book, My Adventures with God, and so I thought it was a great chance to bring this interview out from storage.

On April 2, I attended the 33rd annual Writers of the Future Award ceremony. With a dragon gracing the red carpet and the stage. the ceremony had a keynote from the co-founder and president of Dragon*Con Pat Henry, and presented this year's Lifetime Achievement Award to Mike Resnick.

I am proud to consider myself a geek. While my junior high and high school years were the character-building years wherein I determined I'd rather be weird than normal (much to my mother's chagrin), it wasn't really until college and beyond that I finally got to the point where I could say 'fuck it' as to whether people liked me or not, and just be myself regardless - which included re-claiming the nerd, geek, and dork names I had been called growing up.

I share this reclaiming with a number of people, from Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day to Joss Whedon and Steven Moffat: people who are not ashamed to proudly proclaim that they are indeed geeks. In fact, I had heard about Speak Out With Your Geek Out via the online comic Dork Tower which I read because it's "funny because it's true" humor about geeks and geek life.

So, per the blog, I am writing to share my enthusiasm and love of some my various things I feel I am a geek about. I am not detailing everything - otherwise, this blog entry would be a novel (and Wheaton's already done that), but these are the ones that come to mind.
