Early access previews at Patreon and Ream

I'm now providing one-month-early previews of my new e-book fiction through Patreon and Ream. I want to give a treat to readers who financially support me, while still making those stories quickly available to the rest of my readers. The early access model seems to be the best way to handle that.

Have to write this down so I don't forget again, and I thought it might be interesting to someone else.

It's rare that I'm reminded of something from the past that I'd forgotten.

I was watching a video about department and grocery stories of the past, and they mentioned that Safeway was one of the first places to use self-checkouts. It triggered a memory of a vacation I took in California. I went into a Safeway to pick up some things and was confronted with self-checkout for the first time (they weren't a thing yet where I lived). I now remember how alien it felt to me, like what kind of bizarre things does Cali have?!, and how I wasn't quite sure what to do with them. LOL. I believe the store was somewhere around the Malibu area.

It's fun to regain a forgotten memory!

Interesting discovery:

I was using my old computer in the kitchen today and watching YouTube videos. I didn't bother logging in and thus noticed something.

Either zero or at most just one ad break interruption! (I even purposefully watched one I'd seen before that I know had too many ads). Lately, there have been more and more; sometimes several on a ten-minute vid! That's ridiculous. Not a great incentive to log in. It's like YT punishes you for having an account. Since YT thought I was a brand-new user, it's possible ads would increase once it tracks the kind of things I watch and decides what sort of ads to target me with... although I can't say I'm ever interested in what it showed me.

I do now use DuckDuckGo so I rarely have to deal with ads anymore, but I still have an idea of how many as I often take the extra step of letting the video play on YouTube muted simultaneously, because there are several creators I want to support with likes, comments. It's important to play the video through to the end, or it will count negatively against them.

My fic is now completed!

I've had so much fun writing this epic rollercoaster of a story.

I wanted to tell a story about queerness, what it means to be queer in a world that feels like it isn’t meant for you, and what happens when you do find your people and your family – even (or maybe especially) when they were there all along.

About what it’s like when you allow yourself to exist openly, as vulnerable and scary as that might be. And then the happiness of it, the sheer daring thrill of coming out and being who you are!

It’s a very Cabin Pressure sort of thing, actually.

So if you are a fan of found family, if you want to see a happy ending completely different from Zurich, if you want to talk about queerness within Cabin Pressure... Come and have a read. <3

Title: The Pink Pound
Pairing: Martin Crieff/Douglas Richardson
Tags: Crack Treated Seriously, Angst, Coming Out, Same-Sex Marriage, Faking/Pretend Relationship, Fake Marriage, Pilots, Flying, Money, Friendship/Love, Drag Queens, Makeup, Past Alcohol Abuse/Alcoholism, Singing, Accidental Drug Use, Marriage Proposal, Wedding Rings, Gay Bar, Self-Discovery, Travel, Sharing a Bed, Late Night Conversations, Sexuality, Sauna, Laughter During Sex, Gay Sex, Endearments, Sleeping Together, Queer Culture, LGBTQ Themes, Found Family
Summary: As same-sex marriage is about to become legal, Carolyn takes up the idea to profit from it all and rebrands MJN Air as an LGBTQ airline - inspiring various queer shenanigans and a wedding scheme as only Douglas could imagine. Plus a fair bit of coming out, because well, wanting to pretend to be gay is nothing like the real thing right, or is it?

Much more prominent than the sling is a statue of the Living Dead that stands near the altar. Carved and painted in the northern style, the slave stands naked except for an iron mask in his hand, representing the moment upon which he receives his freedom. His face is scarred from wearing the mask for so long, but in his eyes lie hope.

Although the statue is intended to represent all of the Living Dead, both men and women, it is based on the likeness of one of the last men to be freed from slavery before the Emorian occupation: Kester son of Hoare, who died in the attack upon Council Hill by the Emorians. Although free at the time of his death, he was present at the palace on the day of the attack because he had voluntarily chosen to return to his place of slavery, in order to help other slaves survive their misery. The statue was commissioned and paid for by Kester's son, the present High Lord of Koretia.

[Translator's note: Kester's story forms part of Death Mask.]

It came to me in one of those flashes of insight; something that probably should have been obvious. So, after a very long time of trying to figure out why I get such bad muscle cramps in the hot summer, and getting no answers from any doctors either, it's now clear -- it's my asthma. Not getting enough oxygen = sweating more in the heat = dehydration = muscle cramps.

Yeah, I feel kind of dumb for not figuring it out before. I just never tied the two together because most of the time I don't have any noticeable breathing issues, it's only when the humidity gets into the high 90s and I'm not in the A/C. I started thinking about how muscles need oxygen, so then I did some research and found out that asthma can indeed lead to more sweating. So, controlling my asthma should also help with the heat issues.

Today was a much better day because with that further knowledge, I prepared better. Explained to my co-worker that I have asthma so I can't do as much physical stuff as her in this heat and didn't push myself as much as I used to. Yeah, I took some medicine, too. No cramps at all today!

In the corner of the sanctuary is a small table with a boys' sling upon it. Far from being a mistake, this is one of the most moving monuments in the sanctuary. The sling represents the thousands of orphan boys who, over the centuries, were forced by their guardians – the priests – to serve in this sanctuary's Rites of Death. The Jackal, who was raised by the priests, has many memories of such services, which he, like the other orphan boys, was given no choice but to participate in. The sling was donated by a later orphan boy grown up, who once used the sling to pitch stones at the priests' house, out of anger at the priests for what they had done.

[Translator's note: The life of one such orphan boy takes an unexpected turn in Blood Vow.]

Home and Heat

Well,l I hemmed and hawed, and even called in late, before deciding to stay home altogether. Considering I can barely breathe, I just don't think it would be a good idea to sit in that heat today.  My Ashma med didn't do much to help yesterday, so I don't have much faith it would today. My co-worker's mother has severe Ashma, and she ended up in the hospital yesterday. I'm not sure why it's so much worse right now since it's been hotter. Maybe the humidity?  Next week is supposed to be a bit cooler, but I really can't wait till fall.

Cue the neighbor across from me screaming bloody murder, yelling 'help me!' I legit thought she was ill or being attacked and literally had my phone in my hand dialing 911 when I heard her saying things like, "I have to go to work," and "fine, I don't care if you tear the place apart!" And slammed the door as she left -- then I realized she was yelling at the cat that hangs around here (which she happens to be feeding). Sounds like it's happened before, with unpleasant results. I have to be careful myself or he will run into my apartment when I open the door. Luckily, I always have my cane and can use it to shoo him away.

I've just been listening to this interview with Bruce Boxleitner, and he talked about something I found interesting. I've had many discussions here about the negative impact of the internet; how people don't talk to each other anymore, etc. And Bruce was speaking about how different doing TV is now from the days of Scarecrow and Mrs. King, and one of the things he said is how actors used to hang out together and talk, joke, etc. between takes, and it became like a family - now they're all on their phones and no one interacts.

So, it affects even celebs. It's just not good.

It's an interesting video otherwise, too.

I've had enough of summer

The weather is horrid. High temps with high humidity. I ended up leaving work a few hours early, because I couldn't breathe and I'm having bad heat cramps again. I'm debating whether to call in tomorrow or not, as it's supposed to be even hotter than today. Unfortunately, with my new position my desk is now in the warehouse not the office, so I spend more of my time in a non-air-conditioned space instead of half and half as I used to.

I wish there was some way to avoid my heat sensitivity. I drink water, Gatorade, Body Armour, and take potassium; I use a cooling cloth and have a fan at my desk, but nothing I do seems to help.
